The theme for this year’s elective was The Real and The Imagined. Second year students were invited to join the elective on a brief-by-brief basis, so they could pursue their own projects alongside.
I took the opportunity to work on the brief called Freeze frame, where we were used drawing to study movement from real life and from film. I looked at dance; which I had been interested in studying through drawing for a long time. I developed a series of studies of dancers, working from live performances at the Southbank Centre and from the film “Tango” by Carlos Saura. Through these works I explored ideas relating to movement, space and the body which I am fascinated by.In particular, I was interested in revealing particular patterns of the movement through drawing, using it to expose moments of tension and release.
